I just want to watch 4k movies I have on my hard drives. What is sufficient enough to make this happen? I've looked over and over and apparently a HTPC means you game as well. I want a HOME THEATER that plays 4k video, nothing else.

I would be shocked if you did return it though.I can find plenty of HTPC builds with graphics cards, but I don't want a HOME THEATER PC that plays games. I am more of a purist and would rather play a Blu Ray in its native un-adulterated format on my 4K player than waste chunks of my life ripping movies and sticking them on a NAS never to be watched again (but if I did want to I still can).īuy a Shield Pro on amazon and if you don't like it, send it back within the return period, nothing lost. I also gave up a long time ago on ripping movies and sticking them on my NAS. Yes there are always niggles but there is no, one, perfect media box out there.

NVidia update regularly and the hardware is pretty much bomb proof. You can Run Kodi, Plex or similar, you choose and you get easy access to all of the streaming services in a nice GUI.
NAS and shield combo will just about trump anything that you can build, for speed and reliability and will cost you less. Crappy tuners, updates breaking software, gpx cards not really designed to output to AVRs or TVs properly, underscan, overscan, codec licenses, trying to get a reliable remote to work, failure to wake from hibernate, anti-virus scans, permissions, log-ons, firewalls the list goes on and on.įace it, the HTPC is now dead in the water.

When Windows Media Centre died as an OS, so did any real concept of running a windows based media PC as a reliable source of media playback. I have run HTPCs for years and finally gave up when I moved to my Shield - I have never looked back. If you think that the Shield has bugs, then an HTPC on Win 10 is going to slay you.
